To facilitate and secure your care, you must bring   the following documents to each consultation :

  1. Letter from your doctor or specialist, results of recent additional tests if any: imaging, biology, etc., a copy of any medication prescriptions you are taking, and your blood group card.
  2. One of the official identification documents below:
  • National identity card or passport (French or foreign)
  • Permanent or temporary residence card or permit
  • Receipt for application for residence permit
  • Republican identity document
  • Travel document for minor foreigners
  • For children without official ID: birth certificate or family record book + official ID of at least one parent.

  1. Other documents to present:
  • Up-to-date health insurance card, legible CMU certificate
  • Special care (work accident, state medical aid, care by a third party, ALD care protocol, maternity, etc.)

The course of the consultation

A medical consultation at a hospital is no different from that of other doctors. It involves several steps:

  1. The doctor will ask you questions: the reason for your visit, your personal or family history, your professional activity.
  2. He examines you.
  3. He can prescribe additional tests: biological analyses, medical imaging (if necessary)
  4. He makes a diagnosis
  5. It offers support: consultation with another healthcare professional, prescription of tests, treatments, etc.
  6. He may recommend regular monitoring.
  • Do not hesitate to ask questions, to have a medical term explained to you whenever you consider it useful for your understanding.

The pandemic period has shown us that the rhythm of mothers and babies is better respected when visits are few :

  • The mother is more rested and more available for her baby
  • The baby's rhythm is better respected
  • By being less stressed, the baby is calmer
  • Breastfeeding works better

After my Consultation

After the consultation, you may need to undergo additional tests. Make an appointment with the healthcare professional of your choice as soon as possible. Specialist tests can take a long time to complete.

If a new appointment is necessary, the secretary will schedule one for you.

Around the Consultation

In certain chronic or serious illnesses, actions are put in place around the Therapeutic Education of the patient . You may be offered to benefit from this care which will allow you to live better with your illness.

Associations for patients or their relatives can also intervene in or outside the hospital. You can contact them if you feel the need. See the list of approved associations .

The Birth Plan

The birth plan is an approach that aims to identify, verbalize, and formalize one's wishes and concerns regarding the time of birth and the arrival of the child. This approach allows for individualizing and personalizing the care of the pregnancy and childbirth, as closely as possible to the needs of the future parents.

The following specific and personalized support may be offered as part of this monitoring:

  • Acupuncture
  • Homeopathy
  • Osteopathy (reserved for hospitalized patients only)
  • Followed by a psychologist
  • Tobacco advice
  • Addiction counseling
  • Stop violence against women

Partners will find in our structure many possibilities to choose their place, both during pregnancy and during labor and delivery. It is important to note that, while the team seeks to encourage the presence of the partner, it is never obligatory, and that we will try, as far as possible, to respect the choice of each, at the different moments. In addition, there is a preparation group dedicated exclusively to future fathers, led by a male midwife, which allows to address "alternative" questions that would be delicate to discuss during preparation or with one's partner. These sessions can also be adapted in a specific mode for same-sex couples. More information at 03 69 55 34 08.

Quality and good treatment during your care

Strasbourg University Hospitals offer pregnancy monitoring, by choice and according to individual needs, by a gynecologist or a midwife. Thanks to the monitoring and support offered throughout your pregnancy and in accordance with your birth plan, you will be able to give birth in the best conditions, whether chosen (choice of an epidural, demedicalized birth, etc.) or made necessary by prenatal diagnosis (cesarean section, labor induction, etc.). Good treatment is at the heart of our care and all the measures implemented in the delivery room aim to ensure optimal safety for patients and newborns. As such, on average in 2017, out of more than 6,000 deliveries:

  • 82% had an epidural, 21% of which was controlled by the patient.
  • 75% of mothers resorted to breastfeeding
  • 24% were triggered
  • 19.5% had a cesarean section
  • 11.8% were affected by instrumental extraction
  • 4% were accompanied by an episiotomy
